Cairo lives - Caroline Ashkar

In January of 2011, young people sparked a revolt after years of feeling that they are the ones who suffer the most consequences of the failed political order. For so long, they have been unable to experience life’s full opportunities and rewards, education, work, income and material well-being. Young generations in Egypt have continuously been affected by these issues, which are not improving for them and the country as a whole.
In the turmoil, chaos, and plight throughout the streets of Cairo, Egypt, people have lost their livelihoods, their families, or even their own lives. Through this critical stage of its post-revolutionary evolution, Egypt continues to be extremely divided. These images capture Egyptian citizens in Cairo, striving to go on with their lives and improve their well-being, and to survive through what might seem to be a never ending decline for their country.
Caroline Ashkar is a photography/video media artist living and working in Southern California. Since graduating from California Institute of the Arts in 2010, she has worked extensively with various non-profit organizations with missions of social justice and development in impoverished communities. Her work has taken her all over the United States, as well as internationally. Currently, much of her work focuses on her Egyptian background. Her main interest in this work lies in this "in-between" stage of post revolution, and pre rebuild, and the juxtaposition of the peoples' hope to build themselves up, while in the midst of a most devastating decline
